Feline Diabetes Signs and Symptoms

Depending upon the type and stage of the disease, feline diabetes symptoms will vary from cat to cat. The prime candidates for diabetes are over weight older males, but cats of either sex and any age may be affected. The classic signs of the disease are excessive urination (polyuria) and excessive thirst (polydipsia). Early on in the disease, your cat may show only these symptoms, or none at all. In addition to polyuria and polydipsia, progressive symptoms may include an increase in appetite, while at the same time losing weight. In addition, sick cats will become lethargic. They also may develop diabetic neuropathy, a condition that causes weakness in the back legs. More severe symptoms may include loss of appetite, vomiting, and dehydration. Over time, afflicted cats may present with liver disease, secondary infections, and display poor hair coat. Additional symptoms can be brought on if a cat develops diabetic ketoacidosis. This is a potentially fatal condition that may cause breathing problems, weakness, vomiting and diarrhea. With proper treatment and disease management, feline diabetes can be controlled. There are two things you can do to help prevent the onset of the disease and reduce its effects in affected cats. First,...

American Rottweilers Make Excellent Therapy Dogs

Most people do not realize that there are two types of Rottweilers. This is because there is very little difference between the two. The two types of Rottweilers are the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler. The German Rottweiler is shorter, stockier and more muscular than the American Rottweiler. The American Rottweiler is taller and thinner through the face and body. Both the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler are black with distinct tan markings over both eyes, cheeks, muzzle and chest. Both have coats that are medium length, coarse and straight and both have a double undercoat. The only difference between the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler is their size. The American Rottweiler is taller and thinner in the face and body while the German Rottweiler is shorter, stockier and more muscular. American Rottweilers are very intelligent dogs and will take over the home if not trained properly. The cute little cuddly puppies grow into giant animals that need to know who the boss really is. These dogs can be stubborn but will learn very quickly from obedience training and should be trained at a very early age. If the American Rottweiler is not trained and socialized early...

How to make home-made treats for your dog
By Kit J.F.R. Murray

We humans are very fond of getting the odd treat now and again, especially when we feel we have been especially good or done something really well. It shouldn't really be a surprise that our pooch pals feel the exact same. With that in mind making a special dog treat for fido should be on our to do list. The pet supplies store are full of off the shelve dog treats that we can just scoop up and head for the checkout. The other option is to make one at home from a dog treat recipe. I have yet to come across any breed of dog that didn't love a treat and even more so when it's home-made. All we need to do is Google "homemade dog cookies," and hundreds of easy to follow suggestions are there to choose from. It's probably best just to double-check the ingredients from any online dog treat recipe that you decide to use to ensure their is nothing in it that could harm your Pet. I've never had a problem using them but always better to err on the side of caution. I have loads of doggy treat recipes but without doubt this one is my German Shepherd Alfie's absolute favorite. Alfie's No1 favorite - Cheesy Dog Biscuit Treats Ingredients: * One cup rolled oats (something like Quaker) * One third (1/3) cup margarine * One cup water/boiling * Three quarters (3/4) cup corn-meal One * One tablespoon sugar * Two (2) teaspoons beef or chicken stock (instant bouillon) * Milk 1/2 cup * One (1) cup grated/shredded cheddar cheese * One (1) egg, beaten * Two to Three (2 - 3) cups whole wheat flour Ingredients assembled, now onto the good part. First of all preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Next step is to Grease the cookie sheets. Using a large bowl to put the boiling water, rolled oats and margarine into and then leave for around ten mins. Next step is to mix in the cheese and egg, milk, bouillon sugar and cornmeal. Using your measuring cup gently spoon in the flour & level off. The flour should be added one cup at a time whilst checking it is mixed thoroughly. You will know that it is ready when the consistency of the dough becomes stiff. Tip the mixture onto a floured suface and using the last of the flour, knead until the mixture becomes smooth and is no longer sticky. Now you can press the dough into a 1/2 inch layer with your hands or a rolling pin. Bone shaped cookie cutters are nice touch to cut with. Next put the cut-out shapes onto greased cookie sheets roughly an inch apart and place into the oven at 325 for around 35-45 mins or when they have gone an inviting golden brown color. With homemade dog treat aplenty your favorite canine will be happily chomping for days to come. Are they really better than the dog treats you can buy at the pet supply store? I dunno, let your dog have the final woof!
