Feline Diabetes Signs and Symptoms

Depending upon the type and stage of the disease, feline diabetes symptoms will vary from cat to cat. The prime candidates for diabetes are over weight older males, but cats of either sex and any age may be affected. The classic signs of the disease are excessive urination (polyuria) and excessive thirst (polydipsia). Early on in the disease, your cat may show only these symptoms, or none at all. In addition to polyuria and polydipsia, progressive symptoms may include an increase in appetite, while at the same time losing weight. In addition, sick cats will become lethargic. They also may develop diabetic neuropathy, a condition that causes weakness in the back legs. More severe symptoms may include loss of appetite, vomiting, and dehydration. Over time, afflicted cats may present with liver disease, secondary infections, and display poor hair coat. Additional symptoms can be brought on if a cat develops diabetic ketoacidosis. This is a potentially fatal condition that may cause breathing problems, weakness, vomiting and diarrhea. With proper treatment and disease management, feline diabetes can be controlled. There are two things you can do to help prevent the onset of the disease and reduce its effects in affected cats. First,...

American Rottweilers Make Excellent Therapy Dogs

Most people do not realize that there are two types of Rottweilers. This is because there is very little difference between the two. The two types of Rottweilers are the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler. The German Rottweiler is shorter, stockier and more muscular than the American Rottweiler. The American Rottweiler is taller and thinner through the face and body. Both the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler are black with distinct tan markings over both eyes, cheeks, muzzle and chest. Both have coats that are medium length, coarse and straight and both have a double undercoat. The only difference between the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler is their size. The American Rottweiler is taller and thinner in the face and body while the German Rottweiler is shorter, stockier and more muscular. American Rottweilers are very intelligent dogs and will take over the home if not trained properly. The cute little cuddly puppies grow into giant animals that need to know who the boss really is. These dogs can be stubborn but will learn very quickly from obedience training and should be trained at a very early age. If the American Rottweiler is not trained and socialized early...

Pet Store Earnings: Where Does All of that Money Really Go?

As a child and now as an adult, you delight in visiting the pet store on each trip you take to your local mall. You have even purchased a pet or two from that pet store, and are amazed at the variety of pets that are available from week to week. This has led you to wonder where the pet store earnings from all of these sales actually go. Pet Store Earnings: The Basics First of all, you would need to know where the dogs, primarily the most popular part of any pet store, come from. The more reputable pet stores get their dogs from breeders, who then sign a contract with the pet store. This contract assures the breeder a certain percentage of the pet store earnings gotten from the sale of the dogs. If, however, your pet store is only a basic pet store with dogs that look rather unhealthy, they might get their dogs from a puppy mill. A puppy mil is a place where dogs are over bred in unsanitary conditions. The pet store earnings from these dogs are thus considerably more, since the pet store directly purchases these dogs for a flat fee. A large...

Pet FAQ - Which Pet Should I Choose?

Question: How do I choose the pet that is right for my family? In the first place, never buy a pet on a whim. Bringing a cute kitten or puppy home just because it was too cute to pass up can be a mistake. Rather, you should discuss the matter of pets with your entire family. Don't forget to consider these points: daily feeding, personal attention, playtime, grooming, veterinary care and house training (if applicable). You may also want to ask each family member why they want a pet. Make sure your children understand that a pet is another family member, not just a toy, and the needs of the pet should be considered alongside other members of the family. Next, review your lifestyle. Let's say, for example, you have a downtown apartment and have a rigorous work schedule. In this case it may be best to consider a pet such as a bird, a cat or maybe even a fish. If your daily routine includes jogging or running, then a dog might be a good choice for you. To better understand the needs of a potential pet, you can talk to breeders and other pet owners. Attend local pet...
