Feline Diabetes Signs and Symptoms

Depending upon the type and stage of the disease, feline diabetes symptoms will vary from cat to cat. The prime candidates for diabetes are over weight older males, but cats of either sex and any age may be affected. The classic signs of the disease are excessive urination (polyuria) and excessive thirst (polydipsia). Early on in the disease, your cat may show only these symptoms, or none at all. In addition to polyuria and polydipsia, progressive symptoms may include an increase in appetite, while at the same time losing weight. In addition, sick cats will become lethargic. They also may develop diabetic neuropathy, a condition that causes weakness in the back legs. More severe symptoms may include loss of appetite, vomiting, and dehydration. Over time, afflicted cats may present with liver disease, secondary infections, and display poor hair coat. Additional symptoms can be brought on if a cat develops diabetic ketoacidosis. This is a potentially fatal condition that may cause breathing problems, weakness, vomiting and diarrhea. With proper treatment and disease management, feline diabetes can be controlled. There are two things you can do to help prevent the onset of the disease and reduce its effects in affected cats. First,...

American Rottweilers Make Excellent Therapy Dogs

Most people do not realize that there are two types of Rottweilers. This is because there is very little difference between the two. The two types of Rottweilers are the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler. The German Rottweiler is shorter, stockier and more muscular than the American Rottweiler. The American Rottweiler is taller and thinner through the face and body. Both the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler are black with distinct tan markings over both eyes, cheeks, muzzle and chest. Both have coats that are medium length, coarse and straight and both have a double undercoat. The only difference between the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler is their size. The American Rottweiler is taller and thinner in the face and body while the German Rottweiler is shorter, stockier and more muscular. American Rottweilers are very intelligent dogs and will take over the home if not trained properly. The cute little cuddly puppies grow into giant animals that need to know who the boss really is. These dogs can be stubborn but will learn very quickly from obedience training and should be trained at a very early age. If the American Rottweiler is not trained and socialized early...

Canine Parvovirus And Your Dog

Canine Parvovirus (more commonly called Parvo) is a viral disease that affects dogs. Parovo is far more common in puppies than adult dogs and can have serious ramifications for the infected animal, including death. Parvo grows best in the rapidly dividing cells of the dog's intestines. As the virus attacks and kills these intestinal cells it causes massive diarrhea and halts or slows the creation of white blood cells. Parvo can often directly infect the heart, of young puppies leading to death. Symptoms of Parvo The symptoms of Parvo start with fever, depression, and lethargy. The dog will usually experience a loss of appetite as well and then eventually show more sever signs like vomiting and diarrhea which is often bloody, this pure blood hs a particulary pungent smell. Once the virus reaches this stage dehydration and death usually follow. Parvo is carried and transmitted by dogs and outbreaks occur in unvaccinated dogs especially in high population areas. The vomit and feces of an infected animal will also carry the virus which is rather resilient and can survive outside the dog's body in the surrounding environment for as long as nine months. Sometimes an adult dog can be infected by...

Sentinel Flavor Tabs & Interceptor Are The Best Prevention

Heartworm is a serious concern for pet owners, and you need to choose the heartworm prevention medication you give to your pet with care. For example, Proheart Six, a heartworm prevention medicine released in 2001 with one injection administered every six months. Seemingly providing a worry free way of taking care of heartworm prevention twice yearly, it came under close scrutiny from the FDA in the USA after more than 5,000 reports of adverse reactions were received, including 415 deaths. The results from the investigations conducted by the FDA proved that ProHeart 6 caused a much higher amount of deaths than regular, monthly heartworm medications. The comparison of ProHeart 6 with 138 deaths in one year, was overwhelmingly higher than the six deaths reported yearly from Heartgard heartworm protection and Sentinel. (FDA May 3, 2004) As with most all medications, the possibility of an allergic reaction from the heartworm control is present and could cause death of the pet. Here are the facts from the 2004 FDA source: Revolution heartworm protection averaged 36 deaths a year and more than eight and a half thousand reactions, so although the number of reactions was almost twice that of Proheart 6, the drug...
