Feline Diabetes Signs and Symptoms

Depending upon the type and stage of the disease, feline diabetes symptoms will vary from cat to cat. The prime candidates for diabetes are over weight older males, but cats of either sex and any age may be affected. The classic signs of the disease are excessive urination (polyuria) and excessive thirst (polydipsia). Early on in the disease, your cat may show only these symptoms, or none at all. In addition to polyuria and polydipsia, progressive symptoms may include an increase in appetite, while at the same time losing weight. In addition, sick cats will become lethargic. They also may develop diabetic neuropathy, a condition that causes weakness in the back legs. More severe symptoms may include loss of appetite, vomiting, and dehydration. Over time, afflicted cats may present with liver disease, secondary infections, and display poor hair coat. Additional symptoms can be brought on if a cat develops diabetic ketoacidosis. This is a potentially fatal condition that may cause breathing problems, weakness, vomiting and diarrhea. With proper treatment and disease management, feline diabetes can be controlled. There are two things you can do to help prevent the onset of the disease and reduce its effects in affected cats. First,...

American Rottweilers Make Excellent Therapy Dogs

Most people do not realize that there are two types of Rottweilers. This is because there is very little difference between the two. The two types of Rottweilers are the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler. The German Rottweiler is shorter, stockier and more muscular than the American Rottweiler. The American Rottweiler is taller and thinner through the face and body. Both the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler are black with distinct tan markings over both eyes, cheeks, muzzle and chest. Both have coats that are medium length, coarse and straight and both have a double undercoat. The only difference between the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler is their size. The American Rottweiler is taller and thinner in the face and body while the German Rottweiler is shorter, stockier and more muscular. American Rottweilers are very intelligent dogs and will take over the home if not trained properly. The cute little cuddly puppies grow into giant animals that need to know who the boss really is. These dogs can be stubborn but will learn very quickly from obedience training and should be trained at a very early age. If the American Rottweiler is not trained and socialized early...

The Playful and Inquisitive Dog: Cairn Terrier

The Cairn is assumed as one of the subcategories of Scotland’s terriers along with the Westies (West Highland White) and the Scottish, The Westies and the Cairns are highly related. For one, Westies are hybrids of white dogs crossed with Cairns of western Scotland. The Westie can be considered as the white variety of the Cairn who has a coat of any color but white. Scotties, however, have longer heads and bodies, have generally dark coats and are aloof than the other two. These dogs originated from the short-haired Skyes. Cairn is the smallest breed among the terrier group. The name Cairn was coined after the small stone piles that marked borders of Scottish farms and graves. During the early times, this breed was used to guide small animals into these piles of stones. However, cairns are strong and sturdy but are not heavy. This dog was already present during the 1500s even before it became popular in 1930, after the appearance of “Toto” in “The Wizard of Oz” as Dorothy’s companion dog. Presently, like the American pit bull terriers, Cairns are used as companion dogs. Among the variety’s talents are tracking, watching over the house, hunting, and performing tricks...

What Dog Shampoo is Right For My Dog?

Just like the type of shampoo that people use can differ from person-to-person, the same applies to dogs. Why? Well, it is because dogs have different skin types just like human skin types differ from each other. Using the wrong shampoo can cause skin irritation and this can cause quite a bit of confusion when trying to find the right shampoo. And do not think that using a human shampoo on a dog is safe because human shampoo does not have the same acidic pH that a dog shampoo does. The dog can experience skin irritation because the human shampoo has a pH that is lower than what the dog's skin needs. So here are some steps to take when choosing a (http://www.happytailsspa.com/) dog shampoo that is appropriate for your beloved dog: Look at your dog's skin and try to determine his or her skin type. If you notice any skin flaking, then your dog most likely has dry skin. This means it is fair to say that your dog has oily skin if you notice there is any type of oil residue when you rub your fingers through your dog's fur or their fur tends to become oily. It...
